If timing a meal for optimum performance, when do you eat?

If you're trying to time a meal for optimum performance during a WOD, when is a good time to eat? 1,2,3 hrs prior? also what's a good rule of thumb for the meal. 50/50 protein/carb or more carb, etc?

thanks for any input.
