I'm a believer. (Zone/Paleo)

I'm deployed overseas, so its tough to eat balanced meals, but I've given it a pretty good effort. I leave the desserts out, and mostly eat chicken/turkey with salads and little to no bread. I've been feeling great overall, but yesterday made me a believer. It was just before lunch, so I thought I'd munch on a few candies that were around the office. After all, I've been doing so well, I can afford to eat a little bit of junk. Had a Clif bar (I know! Forgive me!) and a few tootsie rolls...and in about 20 minutes, I felt like absolute JUNK! All those carbs and sugar hit me at once, leaving me with a headache for the rest of the day (even after dinner). I was also immediately put into "nap" mode. The turkey sandwich I had for lunch helped moderate the pain of it all, but holy cow!

I've been zoning/balancing for so long, that my body is now completely unadapted to my old sugar-eating ways. I've become adapted to eating healthy...no turning back now!

Any other similar experiences lately?

+1 on the carb naps.

That's not unusual for anyone, but for me it has been especially so since altering my diet to dramatically reduce sugar/starch. On the occasions I've ingested a lot of carbs since then, it's wiped me out.

I've cut back on grains big time, still eat a sandwich for lunch (along with fruit). Had steel-cut oatmeal for breakfast twice the last two weeks for breakfast, always with a lot of blueberries added in. Not giving up diary products though.

bread i think is the key to give up. I too cant fully give up dairy. But as a result of giving up bread i have stopped butter /spreads etc.

The only bread i treat myself to is pita bread with hummos.

I still occassionaly have rice but it will be brown rice as its one stage back in the refined chain.

I have dropped 4 llbs in a week since dropping bread.

I decided it would be okay to eat one of those packs of Valentines candy hearts once. It was after a workout, so I thought the insulin spike wouldn't be that big of a deal. I felt horribly weak and shaky for hours afterwards.

Once I start eating bad carbs I don't stop, then I feel horrible the rest of the day.

+1 not to cheat reason

No kidding. I'm glad I'm starting to adapt to a healthier lifestyle, but it makes finding food very inconvenient sometimes.

There are lots of places I end up where the only foods are boxed carbs and candy bars.

Same effect on me. I don't stop until I physically cannot fit anything else into my stomach. Then I feel AWFUL for days. This retrospect always gives me extra incentive to stay on track.
