One of the greatest things I have gained from my Crossfit training is ability to put together a kick-*** workout no matter where I am. Case in point:
My poor unsuspecting girlfriend, Ceci, took me away for a relaxing weekend on a remote Northern California beach; far away from the nearest pull-up bar and rowing machine. We hit the beach the first day, I took a quick look around and said, "We're workin' out today." Some of you might get a kick out of what I saw there and what we did with it. Dave,
Great creativity. While browsing through your pictures, other ideas came to mind. 1. You could turn the log on end, get your shoulders underneath it and possibly perform a squat. Then you turn the log on the other end set it flat on the ground and repeat the sequence in reverse (there's a name for this squat variation, but I'm forgetting it). 2. Being influenced by all of the Get Up! articles I've (re)read recently, I would have tried caber tossing the log. Or you and your wife could've pretended you were in BUDS and ran while each of you held an end of the log over your heads. Occassionally you'd stop and do presses with it, alternating which shoulder the log would come down by. 3. Were those boulders near the stump you we're using for jumps? Carrying/throwing for distance might be fun. Please don't misunderstand me; I think the workout you created was excellent. By sharing your experience, you helped boost my imagination for the next time I'm away from my garage and looking for a workout. Thanks for sharing, Ryan |

Ryan - All your ideas are great ones. I could've been a lot more creative, but I was just so happy to have something to work with. What I really learned is that beach logs and stones can provide days of entertainment (of the workout kind).
You've also given me an idea: I think there's a book or, at least, a website here on the subject of creative beach workouts. If I do something like that I'll use your suggestions. Dave Y |

Ross,
That's the one. Thanks for reminding me of it. For those interested in a pic/description go to: http://www.americanpowerliftevolutio...uatc.1920.html and http://www.usawa.com/rules.html. Dave, Do you have a link regarding the book/website you mentioned? Ryan |

Ryan - there is no book or website that I know of yet; it was just an idea I had while posting this. I'm going to do some serious thinking about it and see if something couldn't be put together soon. If you come across anything already out there let me know, but I think this may be an original.
