How to know if recovery is not good?

I've been doing a short bout of Starting Strength. I've read here and there "if recovery is not good, take an additional day off".
Well, I'm not sore but sometimes after these workouts I want to take a nap and then I feel kinda blah the next two days. I'm not sore... and get weird things like glassy eyes, flushed cheeks, puffy face.

Point is, I'm new enough to all this to not know if my recovery is bad!

How do you know if you're not recovering well enough?

I think the rule is that recovery is "not good" when you can't increase the weight for 2-3 workouts. (If it's only one time, it could be a fluke.)
