Heart Myth?

From the FAQ, Tabata This:

"Lying down between exercises lowers HR faster than standing, sitting or walking, indicating better recovery in the short 60 second rest."

Ever since my high-school cross country days, we were told not to kneel/lay down/stop moving after high-intensity activity for one of a million reasons. "It's bad for the heart to change speeds this fast." "You're more likely to puke." "Your muscles can lock up..." ad nauseam. Does anyone know what's going on here?

There was a thread about this not too long ago asking this same question based on several WOD demos where the athletes hit the deck immediatley after their workouts and whether or not it's healthy.

I think the concensus was that hitting the deck for a very short while, only a few seconds, followed by walking or some other cool down was best. Having the heart go from tons of work to suddenly having to slow itself down would sound like an extra stressor, when a metcon WOD would already be providing ample amounts of stress.

I also think there was a tragic incidence of an athlete actually dying following a workout. Let me see if I can find the thread...

It doesn't matter if you stand or lie down. Whatever you want to do.

Basically the change(s) are going to be small enough that it takes little difference.

By the way, when in doubt, Steven's about as a good a guy to go to with questions on this stuff as anyone. Without finding proof to state otherwise, go with Steven's directions.

I guess that means I can start lying down after my workouts

Basically, it really doesn't matter. It helps somewhat but taking other steps like long deep breaths will help you more...
