Odd nausia/vomiting long after workout.
We have a client that is experiencing something odd. On workout days she gets sick about 6 hours after the workout. It doesn't seem to correlate at all with the volume or intensity of the workout. If she works out, she gets sick much later in the day. It's been very discouraging for her and we've never seen anything like it. She's messed with adjusting diet, keeping a log of activities, nothing seems to correlate except that it's always on a day that she works out.

Couple of questions: how many days a week does she work out, and does this happen ONLY on workout days? How old is she? Any chance she could be pregnant? Any history of eating disorders? Susie |

Works out 2 days/week. Only happens on workout days (though she does have history of digestive stuff).
Late 40s. Odds of pregnancy extraordinarily low ;-) No eating disorders. |

Re: Odd nausia/vomiting long after workout.
That's really strange. The six-hour window, plus its occurence at different intensities, really is a puzzle. Has this always happened to her with exercise, or is this new?
I guess I'd have to suggest a visit to the doctor, and have her keep a good food journal. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps it's something she's eating on workout days: either dairy, or higher fat (think gallbladder) or something she's allergic to.... The last possibility is something psychosomatic or related to an eating disorder, and you're not getting the whole picture. If you guys ever do get a handle on this, could you post about it? I'd like to learn something from your case, it's pretty interesting. Susie |

Re: Odd nausia/vomiting long after workout.
Her initial thoughts were that it were food related so made a lot of adjustments without much effect. She's reduced meal size and eats a little more frequently now, that has helped some, but the problem hasn't completely gone away. I'll try to get some logs on this to see if we can really nail it down. And, yeah, it's pretty odd.

I used to have issues with my stomach at lots of different times, but after I stopped drinking anything with Caffeine, my stomach rarely bothers me at all.

Re: Odd nausia/vomiting long after workout.
I have never heard of consistent nausea/vomiting several hours after a heavy workout. Usually exercise-induced GI upset occurs within a relatively short time period afterwards.
From the history given, it is extremely hard to come up with anything that fits well. The first things I would think of have been mentioned already: pregnancy and psychosomatic. Exercise-associated intestinal ischemia is a very remote possibility, though that usually manifests as abdominal pain and diarrhea since it most commonly affects the large intestine, and only after prolonged exercise (think marathon). Nausea and vomiting is typically associated with stomach and small intestine problems. I would suggest your client see her physician and possibly get to a GI specialist. If at any point she develops bloody emesis or blood in stool, get to an emergency room immediately. |

Re: Odd nausia/vomiting long after workout.
check with a doctor but she may have an ulcer.
from the following wfs link: http://familydoctor.org/online/famdo...rders/186.html "Possible signs of an ulcer Feel better when you eat or drink and then worse 1 or 2 hours later (duodenal ulcer) Feel worse when you eat or drink (gastric ulcer) Stomach pain that wakes you up at night Feel full fast Heavy feeling, bloating, burning or dull pain in your stomach Vomiting Unexpected weight loss" my wife has had gastritis and gastric ulcers several times |
