Hardgainer magazine had cover photo profiles of a lot of these athletes. Lots of greats like John Terry - 132lbs, 610lb deadlift. Four times bodyweight! Amazing. John Davis - Legend. Many like Marvin Eder were or became 'bodybuilders', but their bodies were built on heavy power and o-lifts.

Yeah, and the bodybuilders were all natural.

That's why I prefer seeing old timers they were all natural, more aesthetically pleasing and knew a ton more about proper training thatn their modern counterparts

Bill Seno definitely had an incredible physique, but am I the only one who finds it telling that his squat:bench press was basically 1:1?

Is anyone aware of the orthopedic issues that Powerfifters/Olylifters experience in their post competitive careers?
As much as I love those movements....I'm wary of long term repercussions of that kind of loading.
Powerlifting magazine (Ken Liestner) interviewed a former champion (sorry I can't remember the guys name) who was nursing major hip/knee issues later in life and alluded to the fact that it wasn't uncommon.
He had developed some program of spinal/hip program stuff for competitors to integrate into their programs to try and offset what he had.
A little off topic but when I see those incredible strength feats I always think of that article now and am wondering if others knew more of this

Tim, ask Dan John from three posts above. I believe he has been in the game long enough to give a well informed opinion on the matter. I would suspect that a small percentage of participants experience those side effects you mention.

One of the things I like about the Old strongmen is that they definitely had the strength and performance to match their physiques. It brings to mind two different things I saw on this website a while ago... One was a picture of a Crossfitter doing KB swings and he was pretty ripped up, I think it might have been Greg Amundson, and a quote underneath simply said "form follows function." This thread also reminded me of a picture that Coach once posted of an old fashioned gymnasium, one with ropes, climbing apparatus of all sorts, clubs, etc. I think Crossfit reaches back to this era with the attitude was to train for performance and to enjoy the benefits of a nice physique... not just training to look good.
