Exercises Movements, technique & proper execution

I notice in a lot of exercises that involve squatting, a medicine ball is used as guide to know how low to go. My question is what's the size of this ball? is it a typical ~22lbs medicine ball?

All the Dynamax balls, regardless of weight are 14". Personally, I don't care for it. It makes for a different ROM for people of varying heights and it's too easy to bounce off of.

Using it as a guide is exactly the idea. Medicine ball, basketball, slam-ball, wall-ball, they’re all good. For some people it’s used to deepen their squat “go down UNTIL your butt touches the ball”. For others to teach control of the bottom position “STOP when your butt touches the ball.”

In my case I have an exceptionally low squat for my build, hamstrings to calves and quads to stomach and chest. Last year while doing tabata squats Eva stuffed a Dynamax ball under my butt and told me stop at the ball. She was concerned that I was bouncing off of the bottom and could injure my knees. Stopping when I touched the ball forced me to control the eccentric movement, stop with muscle tension, and made the exercise much more difficult. (As if bottom-to-bottom tabatas needed to be any harder)

I haven’t noticed that the Dynamax balls offer much rebound to a squat but if I saw that a client was bouncing off of it I’d slow them down and teach them to use it as a marker, “just touch it, don’t drop onto it”

I find that is the hardest thing to teach the kids in my PE class. I can get them to squat all the way down, but they always want to bounce at the bottom.
