I read an article in Alive magazine about Dr. Jay Wortman, a Metis from Alberta, who works for the BC Branch of Health Canada's First Nations and Inuit department. That led me to some internet research on him and on First Nations diet in general.

Diabetes is epidemic in Canada's native communities, as it is in First Nations communities around the world. It's pretty easy to see why when Canada's native people have gone from a paleo diet to high-carb mania in as little as two generations. Wortman has a family history of diabetes, and developed diabetes himself. As a doctor, he immediately put himself on a low-carb diet, without calling it Atkins or paleo. His blood pressure, blood sugar, etc. all returned to normal immediately and he lost weight. His wife told him, "You're on the Atkins Diet, dummy."

Now Dr. Wortman is on a mission to reverse the diabetes epidemic in native communities by running a study which places native people on a traditional diet. Of course, Health Canada, who he works for, still advocates the Canada Food Guide for all people. They did develop a native version of the CFG ( (wfs), but that is basically the regular food guide with 'moose' substituted for 'beef'. The CFG is pretty similar to the American food pyramid.

Very interesting reading on the web on this guy. Just google Dr. Jay Wortman. Here's one for you to check out (wfs): diet.html

While Wortman advocates Atkins, his recommendations are very paleo. Any armchair opinions on the difference between a paleo-Atkins diet and paleo or paleo-Zone?
