Snatch banging into pubic bone

Okay so recently i have developed a very bad bump/contusion on my pubic area right above my junk. It absolutely KILLLLLS when I snatch. I feel like I bang every rep into it. Its starting to get to the point where I'm afraid to fully extend/finish the second pull because I'm afraid of the barbell hitting my pubic bone. Earlier this morning I failed way to many reps that were a low percentage of my max because of this.

I would also like to note that I think I have very long arms. In order for the barbell to sit where its supposed to I have to take a fairly wide grip on the bar. My guess is I'm probably an inch away from the collars? And I'm only 5'7". how common is this???

This is my most recent snatch PR from last week to give you some insight as to how I lift and whether or not this is a problem or I just need to man up.

Justin answered a question regarding a similar experience on 70's Big

Scroll down to the vid entitled hitting the ****

http://70sbig.com/ (overall WFS, except for mild language)

He talks about making sure you are still over the bar.

Re: Snatch banging into pubic bone

Thanks Robert for the link, and some persepective. But the link refers to hitting the junk (bone), instead of the area above the junk, the pubic bone. Though I know John North teaches this "hit-n-catch", I remember Burgerner refering to the bar "brushing" your hips, not "banging" your hips.

Michael, I really like your lift. I will bruise myself every now and then. Its only a guess, but maybe the bar is getting too far out in front, and then we try and pull our hips to the bar too fast, and therefore the collision is more than it should be. Watch this video of Aramnau (saw it 1st from J. North's blog), especially the slow mo's. The bar stays so close, that when it does hit the hips, it seems to only "brush" by, instead of violently banging. Juts my 2 cents. So, solution? Keep the bar closer after it passes the knees??

When I had this bruising, I will stick to snatch pulls and balances, and cleans for a week, and it goes away.

Re: Snatch banging into pubic bone

What helped me was snatching with a slightly wider grip. That way, I avoid anything painful.

Re: Snatch banging into pubic bone

In the long term widening your grip as well as doing some Pendlay rows or bent rows will increase your ability to boost from the pocket rather than down low on your pubic bone.

In the short term the same thing happened to me and I went to Sport Authority and got one of those cheese bar pads that people who don't know how to squat use. A lot of weightlifters will also put some kind of pad in the front of their shorts but the bar pad took care of it until my pubic bone healed.

I just take an old shirt and fold it up and place it down there. Works like a charm.
