Re: Want to lean out

3 things you have to do:

1. Reduce your calories to lose 1 lb per week. Best to use a program like MyFitnessPal to track your calories.
2. Strength train 3-4 times a week.
3. 30-40% of your food should be protein. The rest doesn't really matter.

It really is that simple. When on a cut, don't overtrain. Workout 3-4 days a week with high intensity and rest the other days.

Re: Want to lean out

IMO, it is not just about eating less. Focus on the quality of the foods you take in. Cut out added sugars, processed carbs, etc. Eat lots of meat and veggies.

What does your daily intake and training look like right now?

Re: Want to lean out

Yeah, like Joey said, the quality and type of food will absolutely have an effect on how you feel, how much you like your food, and what kind of body you'll have after you've lost weight. Based on my experience and the experiences of other people I know who've tried multiple weight loss options I like a paleo type diet for weight loss. Not the only way to go, but a good one. You can try a "paleo challenge" where you try it strict for 30 days. It's a great way to see what you like, what you don't, what makes a difference for you, and breaks some bad habits. At the end of the 30 days you can take what was a good fit for you and transition it into long term lifestyle. That's some general stuff, but cruise the threads here for tons more discussion on these topics.

Why? Not that I don't agree with cutting carbs, it tends to work better. But you can lean out eating crap

Re: Want to lean out

You can also go at it moderately. One recommended method is to examine your diet and subsititute TWO of your vices with virtueous choices. For example, sugar based soda or juice with water, pop tarts with whole grain bread, ice cream with whole fruit, pork butt with pork loin, mixed vegetables for half of the pasta on your plate, etc, etc, etc. Over a year 200 calories less per day can add up to 20 fewer pounds of fat theoretically.

Of course you can totally renovate your diet at once. For the most part, paelo or the zone works because the food options are more filling and/or lead to fewer hunger pangs. However there can be relationship and social ramifications to a total diet change, as well as potential energy and mood issues, at least for a time. Depends if you are up to deal with this at this time...

What is the real objective? Just to lean out? Or to be healthy?

If the goal is just to lean out, become a meth addict. That'll do it.

If the goal is to be healthy, consider that maybe you should have a healthy diet.
