Members coaching members

There was an article posted a while back on the Affiliate Blog about members coaching other members.

I've been having that issue at my gym recently and wanted to reference that article, but I have been unable to find it.

Does anyone recall who or when it was posted?

Re: Members coaching members

What do you mean by members coaching members? I was glad to see my members watching and coaching others in class if I was helping someone else, because 1. I must have taught them well because they were doing it right, 2. the community was that of helping your buddy out. (they would however take a back seat when myself or my other coach made it over there)

Unless you mean members running workouts in their garage and taking other members to it...

Re: Members coaching members

I guess I should have given an example...

I have a young member, 20 years old, that thinks he's top dog. One of the newer members asked him about kipping pullups. This new member is still on the 2nd thickest band and should not be doing kipping until his strength is built up.

I turned around and he was violently swinging from the pullup bar.

I don't mind if the new members ask the others simple questions, like "can you remind me what a push jerk looks like".

Re: Members coaching members

Ahh I get you. I don't know if it needs to be a more complicated situation than it should be. Just take each of them aside individually and mention why it's too soon to be trying the kip. Give the new guy some early progressions to start working on the basic swing, and mention to top dog that you appreciate him trying to help a new guy out, but it's not the right time in his (new guy's) training to be trying full kips.

No one needs to get butt hurt over it.

That's only one example. I wanted to reference that post because it was spot on and would speak to a few others as well. Just not able to find it.

Re: Members coaching members

I had to address this issue recently. Here's how I did it:

Put it on the website is thought #1.

The second is more a way to handle the overly enthusiastic member. Handled correctly they can be a real asset. Teach them to bring the member to you so they can learn how you would handle it.

The member with questions gets coached by a coach and the enthusiastic member gets some insight on how you address coaching situations and your thinking. The member coach might someday be a trainer. Ideally you want that person to 1) Refer people to you for coaching 2) Echo your coaching principals.
