Ryan, I don't know if I can explain this adequately but I will try. I don't really lock out with the lats - I flare the lats so that my shoulder girdle stays depressed, by that I mean "un-shrugged." My lats stick out pretty far, so if I keep my elbows close to my sides, my triceps get squashed against my lats. (This is what I'm calling "locking off".)This pressure helps push me out of the bottom position. I can do this with pushups, too.
