College Student. Help!!

I am a college student with limited funds. I desperately want to eat better and get my diet tuned in. I don't: drink carbonated beverages, eat bleached breads, or eat much sugar(mostly no sugar). However, I find myself eating the same things over and over. I am ashamed to admit that I live with my parents and am at the mercy of their dietary habits.

I usually just eat things like, grilled chicken salads, oatmeal with apples, bananas, peaches, pears, oranges, any veggies that we happen to have here, grilled chicken with mixed veggies, sometimes lean red meats, Kashi cereals, milk, 100% juices. But I have to say that the most abundant thing I eat (3-5 times a week) is grilled chicken and mixed veggies. I get real tired of it, but it's the only thing that cheap enough for me to eat regularly.

Any suggestions on how to expand my diet choices, while being healthy or if anyone sympathizes with me please let me know. Thanks

Hi Jeremy:

Yours is a pretty common problem, based on the number of similar threads we've had.

Jeremy, try learning to cook. Right now I'm in community college and have become very good at cooking at home. I can make one heck of a paleo pizza.

Re: College Student. Help!!

I'm in the same boat you are man.. I keep trying to cut down the costs because I'm spending like $400/mo on food! :O Right now I'm on vacation but I've been planning a few ways to cut the budget when I get back. I try and find convenience too since I usually don't have much time. I also plan on starting Starting Strength beginning of next school year, so money will get REAL tight. Hope some of it helps!

-Buy and cook whole turkeys and chickens.. then cut them up, weigh out 4 oz of meat, wrap and freeze. Just pop it in the microwave for 2 min when you need it. You might waste a good day on the turkey, but thats like 12-15 lb of meat that'll last a good long time. Usually I buy chicken breast and deli turkey- to expensive

-I buy frozen brocolli and green beans. Some veg can get expensive due to low crab = you have to eat a ton at once. Just pop in the microwave and they're steamed

-On that last note, fruits are generally more carb packed for what you pay, meaning if you can't afford 7 artichoke heads a week (3$ each for me! screw that), eating less green may be your only financial option to eat paleo

I need to find more ways myself, milk is gonna be ~150$/mo since I don't trust non organic that well :x

Re: College Student. Help!!

I work at the fitness center at my college, so I have a little income. I guess I'll have to do more penny penching in order to save up some money. Also, I've read up on the Zone diet but I've never heard of this Paleo diet(I feel way out of the loop). Someone post a site the explains Paleo, please.
