I asked Tommy Kono about the alleged study. He hadn't heard of it, but here is what he said:

At 5'6 I used to stand bare feet under a basketball rim and jump and touch the rim to win bets. I used no running start but just a quick squat down while swinging my right arm upwards and touching the rim. For the basketball players of 6'2 this is nothing but for someone my height jumping 10 ft. high is proof that lifting improved my vertical jump. I was adept at the long jump too.

Geez, I'm 6'3" and can barely touch the backboard!! I need Brad to check my genes and isolate the "white guy jumping" one and destroy it!

speaking of shane hamman i saw shane challenged by melanie kosoff who was a former gymnast....in back flips on one of the platforms at the olympic training center. kosoff was 5' and 100 lbs or thereabouts...haman was 369 lbs....shane did a standing back flip on the platform from a stand up start!!! unreal!! my son beau at 5'9 can stand under the bb rim and touch the rim with both hands and can dunk a tennis ball with a running start.

Just thought I'd mention, that the olympic weightlifting class at crossfit north is amazing. Nick is a great coach. We learn something every week and improve every week in both form and strength/speed.

If you are in the Seattle area, you should join us @9am saturdays.

... and speaking of jumping, at the end of class, we have been raising the pommel horse up to 50 in and doing box jumps!

Jumping up on top of a 50" pommel horse! That's absurb. I'm 6'3" and I'm pretty happy with getting on top of a 42" box.
