Dubble under - rope length

Is there any method to work out the optimal rope length or is this just trial and error?

Whats your method?

Re: Dubble under - rope length

Some say to step on the rope with both feet and pull it up to your armpits. The length of the rope would be straight up from the outside of your foot to the armpits. That's where the handle should be.

I think this is a good ballpark measurement. I like to fine tune it by listening. When you do double unders you should hear swish-swish. Maybe you'll hear a light tap-TAP of the rope, especially the second one when you're on the way back down. If you hear smack-smack the rope is too long. If it's hitting your feet it's too short.

I step on it with one foot (my right) and bring it up to about my armpits/just over the nipple area.

Rx ropes sizes a bit on the shorter side, but it's somewhat preference:

Re: Dubble under - rope length

Actually looked both of the methods above and found a 7inch difference in length. The chart had a 90' length but using my armpits gave me a 97' length.

I must say i have 2 limits to look at now, one upper and one lower.

Trial and error from hear on.... and the tap

Yeah, I bought my rope from RXSmartGear & used their sizing. I just kept getting frustrated because with my older $10 rope I could get a few DU's in a row most of the time, but with the new rope I couldn't even get one. Once I finally checked the length as a possible issue, I realized it was far shorter than my original. Unfortunately, it's been months since I ordered it (my own fault) and too late to return or swap it out.

Re: Dubble under - rope length

IMHO, Rx's sizing chart is worthless. It sizes me with a 9'0" or 9'1" rope, depending on my height in shoes. I tried out a 9'2" rope, and my coach immediately goes, "that's way too short." I had a Rogue speed rope as well, that I had unfortunately tried to size, and cut off the excess. I had two worthless ropes! I ended up ordering a replacement Rogue cable, which comes 10' long. I have the collar slide down MAYBE 3", so 9'9" and I have been getting better and better at doubles ever since. Doing the "step on" method, my rope comes slightly higher than my armpits. If you don't have a rope, then I suppose you could just measure from your armpits to the ground and double that, maybe round up, since stepping on a rope forms a "V," which would be just slightly longer than two perfectly straight lines.

Definitely don't just do armpits to the ground x2; then you're leaving out the 4 or so inches that are the width of your feet, and will end up with a rope that is too small.

Re: Dubble under - rope length

I bought the SR-1 Long Handle Bearing Speed Rope so i am going to play a little with the length and see what happens.

Re: Dubble under - rope length

The armpit length is a good place to start but there is also a lot of personal preference involved and how you're body is built. I started with armpit length and ended up taking approximately a foot off the rope until it felt right. I'm 6'4" with a long torso and short legs and use the same size rope as a girl at our box who is 5'3". I like a short rope because it forces me to keep my hands low and tight and use my wrists to spin the rope vs using my elbows/shoulders.
