OHS/coaching the OHS

So I have a buddy who lives cross-country from me. He workouts out in a globo gym and isn't going to pay for a box, but he follows OPT programming pretty religiously. He, however, is really struggling w/OHS, even at super light weights (45-55#). He has problems locking out his arms w/the bar in the overhead position, can't stabilize the bar at the bottom of the squat very well, etc.

Otherwise, he's adequately strong (although not elite). 280# squat, 180# power clean, 335# deadlift, 15 strict pull-ups. I think he has some shoulder mobility issues (naturally shoulder alignment seems overly internally rotated/rounded forward). What issues can cause the problems locking out the elbows?

If he has issues in the bottom of the squat, don't try to add load. Use OHS with just a PVC as a diagnostic.

Locking out at the top could be a lot of things, from an awkward grip on the bar to shoulders being too tense to scapula not being retracted to just general elbow/upper arm mobility issues.

Bottom of the squat could be tight hips, unstable back, shoulder issues, technique issues...

There's a reason OHS is one of the best mobility/stability diagnostic tools.

Have him check (wfs); best resource for these types of things.
