I love how the crowd recognizes the awesomeness of the muscle-up with a "whoooooaaa"

*i know it's not his per se, but it's the video we know about.
" whoaaaaaa"

I had the exact same reaction as the crowd, this muscle-up was smooth and beautiful, like his entire routine/choreography !

Great video, thank you !

Great job, skinny!

Next time film yourself doing these with "Air on the G String" in the background.

Nice video, Steven.

Re: Deadhang muscle up!

Saw it first on beast skills! I'll train that for a while I guess with harness assistance.

Gant,
"Air on the G String" - what's that?

Don't be hating that I look better than you in my board shorts

Re: Deadhang muscle up!

This may seem like a stupid question, but how much of a muscle up is muscle, and how much is technique?

I can do 11 bar chin ups, I can do 5-6 or so pull ups with 25 lbs at 185 lbs, and have done a single with 45 lbs before at 185 lbs.

I'm trying to avoid kipping through the transition period, as I feel it kind of defeats the purpose of the muscle up; even if it takes me ten times as long, I'd rather eventually just get my dead hang.

Is the muscle up that much harder to start from full extension? I don't see what the difference would really be starting with slightly bent arms, though I see how it might be more difficult having to drop down for multiple reps.

IMHO - if you are already strong enough and have some basic athletic ability (and it sounds like you are and you do), then it is actually mostly mental.

I did one the first time I tried, and that was about 3 months into CF. The owner of my affiliate asked me to try it one night, and sure enough, I got on the rings, tried and succeeded.

A friend at my gym who could do way more pull ups than I could, had lower body fat, was a much faster runner, etc., failed and failed for a while at trying to get them. But once he got the first one, he quickly got multiples.

PS; my first several MUs were dead hang too - I didn't learn to kip into them until about 2 months later.

Re: Deadhang muscle up!

It's mostly technique. Should have some decent vids on youtube now teaching it on rings (maybe). I posted in digital coaching on how to do the transition without kipping a couple days ago.

You and your board shorts...

Air on the G String is the song playing in the video Steven posted. It's very pleasant. Perhaps you could listen to it while shaving your legs, shaping your eyebrows, or whatever it is you Florida pretty boys do.

I guess what I found amazing was just how well it was executed. He makes it look like his body FLOATS up into that L-sit! No wobbling in the rings, his elbows look like they don't even get closer than a 90 degree angle and they never jut up and back into the air, and his chest hardly dips forward at all. It's beautiful (and I don't feel like less of a man for saying so, damn it!).

I recognize that that takes much less strength than a maltese or inverted cross but still. Amazing to watch.
