Post Knee Injury Squatting

I fractured my right patella (knee cap) about 3 years ago. When the doc took x rays he sent me home to my couch for 6 weeks to heal and the only thing he told me was to never do deep squats on it. I started doing CF about 4 months ago and have seen a huge increase in the strength of my legs but I am worried about doing deep squats for fear of re injuring that knee. So I guess I am just asking if anyone has been through anything similar and would have any advice or solutions?
