Re: Official WordPress users thread.

I usually resize them to 1600xsomething. Then when I post I just add them as a thumbnail. I also run a shadowbox type plugin that resizes the full pic (once clicked on) to the size of your screen.

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

Hey Adam, actually what I'm trying to do is inserting any of my pictures from my computer on the sidebar, not the CFJournal link. I couldn't find any specific widget for that.
Do you have any idea how to do it?
Thanks for helping,
Joel

Sure... it basically takes two steps: uploading the picture to your server, and adding the code to the sidebar.

Uploading the image: the easiest way to do this, if you aren't familiar with FTP, is to use the "WP Easy Uploader" plugin, which essentially acts as a simplified FTP program. (Go to Plugins Add New, and search for "wp easy uploader"; when it comes up, click Install, and then Activate.)

Now in your Tools section, you'll find a Upload Files link. And in there, you'll see the place to choose a file from your computer, the option on where to put it (your uploads folder is a solid choice), etc.

Once you've done that, the link to that image file should be something like this:

http://crossfitwhatever.com/wp-conte...some-image.jpg

Remember that, because we're about to use it...

Adding the code to the sidebar: If you're using widgets, go into Appearance Widgets and you'll see a big list of widgets, and your widget-enabled areas on the right.

If there's more than one area enabled in that drop-down menu, choose the one you need (hope you can figure that out; hard to predict from here... let me know if you get stuck), and click "Show." Then, from the big list on the left, find the one marked Text and click "Add". It'll appear on the right side. If you've got other widgets in there, you can drag them around to pick what order you want them in; if you don't, then know that when you add a widget, all the default code from your sidebar will probably disappear, and you'll need to add back in anything you want as new widgets. But hey, there's a big menu of widgets there for you, so...

Click 'Edit' on the blue widget bar, and paste this code in there (you should recognize the source (src) part):

<img src="/wp-content/uploads/some-image.jpg" alt="what the image is about" />

Save your changes, and go look at your site. Hopefully, all is well. Go back and adjust stuff in your Widgets area if you need to, or give us a holla and we'll help.

Now, if you aren't using widgets, let us know; that's a whole 'nother set of instructions that I'd rather not type if I don't have to.

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

I wanted to let everyone know that there are two great ways to make your site easily viewable on an iPhone/iPod touch/Android...

WP-Touch plugin: http://www.bravenewcode.com/wptouch/ (WFS)
Intersquash: http://www.intersquash.com/index.php (WFS)

It may not seem like a big thing, but with the way the world is getting more and more mobile, it makes sense to do it. I got into a situation not long ago where I was sharing CrossFit with some eager 15-year-olds at a bbq, and one of them grabbed his dad's iPhone and I was able to show them the HQ site (it wasn't ideal, but it worked okay).

Why not make it easier for these folks, right?

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

Does anyone have a wordpress blog and a Facebook page linked up? I'm trying to figure out how to do this using the "Publish to Facebook" plugin, but have the blog posts go to a page for the gym, not my personal Facebook page.

any ideas on this?

thanks!

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

Hmm... I'm poking around in the code on this one (and the guy's other Facebook plugins), and since there's no place to enter your Facebook ID/username/whatever in the options, it must work with whatever Facebook profile you're logged into.

I'd email the guy and ask him about it... from what he's written on his blog, he might just come up with a plugin for you.

(my personal opinion: I'd avoid automatic-posting-to-facebook thingys, to be honest... it's best to give it a personal touch. All the auto-posting things I've seen in the social media world usually end up coming back around and biting us in the proverbial butt. After all, social media is meant to be social, i.e. personal, i.e. authentic. Auto-posting thru bots often defeats that purpose.)

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

Jason - those avatars are more than likely gravatars... people need to sign up (free) at http://gravatar.com (WFS), upload a photo, and be using the same email to post on your site that they used at gravatar.com.

It's possible to add multiple emails at gravatar, too, all linked to one photo.

Jason, I had similar difficulty, I added a gravatar plugin -- and another avatar plugin -- but never got it working successfully. However I'm not using my blog so I have very near zero testing of it.
