most of the time, people here talk about fish oil supps in terms of capsules per day - e.g. 1000 mg 3 times a day, or 3*1000mg 3 times a day, etc.

but, 1000 mg capsules seem to have a wide variation in the actual EPA/DHA that you get in each one. I've seen variations from 180/150 per 1000mg (Carlson's) to 300/200 per 1000mg (Trader Joes).

when you read studies, they sometimes say things like 4.5g/day fish oil equivalent to 1.5g/day n-3 PUFA. But if you just read books or articles that reference 1000mg twice a day - what do you assume they mean? 2 1000mg capsules or suffient capsules to get EPA+DHA=2000mg?

Secondly, are there EPA and DHA daily targets that you all try to hit?

I try to hit 5g of EPA/DHA a day. 4 teaspoons of Carlson's gets me there (800/500 per)

Chris (or anyone) - is 5g daily more or less the Zone standard? That seems pretty high to me, just in terms of what people throughout history would have been able to obtain on a daily basis (excepting perhaps fishing communities). I supplement, but not nearly at this level. (I take 650mg combined daily).

Is there anything anyone can recommend for me to read that would explain why such extreme EPA/DHA intake levels might be a good idea? (I'm not at all opposed to it, and I'm open to the fact that it might be smart. I just don't know -- and can't really imagine -- why.)

Something less than book-length would be preferable, but if book length is necessary then so be it.

Joe, our protein sources were a heck of a lot diffrent...even 50 year ago. Corn fed as opposed to grass fed/free range beef, chicken, and even fish, has thrown off the fatty acid profile of our food. Back in the day 5g of EPA/DHA wasn't that hard to hit, today you really have to work at it. Chris is right, 4 teaspoons of Carlson's is quick, easy, cheap, and doesn't taste too bad.

I believe that 2.5 g total EPA/DHA is Dr. Sears' standard.

There are several reasons for what you refer to as 'extreme' EFA intakes. The main reason is that the intakes of EFAs (EPA/DHA) need to be high in order to offset the increased amounts of Omega-6's in our modern diets. It's a ratio thing, nothing more. Paleo man had a theorized O-3 to O-6 ratio of around 1:1. Modern man is often over 1:10, sometimes as high as 1:20. The only way to get the 'better' ratio is to up the O-3's (and lower the O-6's).

EPA/DHA have also shown many positive health benefits. Whether that is due to the correction of the ratio mentioned above or if they are ergogenic in their own right, I don't choose to speculate.

All that being said, I take a tablespoon (3 tsp) of Pharmax liquid fish oil--my favorite--every day, giving me around 6.6 grams of EPA/DHA.
