Best ways to promote paleo/zone to one of the normals

Hey,

I have been trying to explain the benefits of eating a paleo/zone style diet to my friends and family, many seem interested and motivated untill I mention we should be trying to centre the diet around lean meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts & seeds and we may want to pay attention to portion sizes for a little while.

The main problems seem to be

-not wanting to give up grains/starches
-not believing that grains/starches can have negative effects
-demotivated at the thought of having to prepare food ahead of time
-even if they buy into this lifestyle, they still have to eat/prepare meals with spouse & family members who do not

I was just wondering if anyone has had successful expierience assisting individuals in changing their diet and how you overcame these obstacles.

I don't eat paleo, so my perspective probably lies somewhere in between "paleo" and "normal."

As I see it, the number one best thing most people can do for their diet is to cut out processed foods, including most restaurant foods. Paleo or not is not nearly as important as not eating things that come out of boxes and cans.

Sadly, most people don't know how to cook and don't want to learn.

I just told my mom to start reading labels (to see all the crap that is really in the food she is buying) and to stop buying foods with more than 5 or 6 ingredients, and everything has to be pronounceable/recognizable. That pretty much solved 90% of her eating problems - just getting her to stop a moment and realize that processed food is basically crap in a box/bag/jar/etc.

She's lost 50 pounds and she's off all her meds. YMMV.

Weighing and measuring things is generally annoying and unnecessary, so I wouldn't expect most people to jump on that wagon.

Cutting sugar and processed foods is the first step.

And, some people don't see any negative effects from grains/starches, even after cutting them and then reintroducing them.
