Surgical Tubing for Pull-ups

I've read several posts that suggest the use of surgical tubing to assist in the development of pull-up strength. Can someone please provide some more detialed information...what lengths should I buy? What diameter should it be (interior & exterior)? Does it need to be a particular material? What's the best way to attach it to the pull-up bar?
