Sunday 05/04/08

Today I was still recovering from hike yesterday. I passed on my Sunday barbell work. Instead, I dug 3 holes and planted 3 rose bushes. Now there is some functional exercise. Digging in clay soil is not easy.

Also, I've been getting anxious to resume my evening swims in my backyard pool so I tested the waters. It was cold but I found it to be tolerable for an easy 200 meters.

"Lunch at Boulderdash"

The Traverse:

52 HM 5.0 minutes
20 HM 2.5 minutes
30 HM 2.0 minutes
16 HM 1.5 minutes

Total = 118 HM 11 minutes

After spending 8 minutes attempting a few V0 and V1 routes and not feeling very strong I decided to do some traversing instead. I guess the previous two workouts wore me down.

Mount Calabasas 1404': 4 miles round trip 1000 feet elevation gain/loss.

33 min. walking to the top
27 min. jogging back to the car

60 minutes

It was a nice foggy morning which kept things cool. I had about a two minute improvement on the hike up compared to 03/15. It looks like I lost a couple minutes on the way down comparatively. However last time I had to estimate my time since my stopwatch stopped on the way down before I finished.

Failed on 280. After first failure I tried again with an alternate grip and failed again. I didn't think my grip would be the issue but I had to try.

Saturday 05/17/08

San Gabriel Mountains
Josephine Fire Road to Josephine Peak 5558'
6 miles round trip; 1900' elevation gain

90 minutes up
70 minutes down
2 hours 40 minutes

I started around 9:30 in the morning and it was already hot. I checked the temperature when I got back to the car and it was 86 degrees. There was no shade on this trail. It was the first time I took this approach and I suspected as much. I usually start from Colby canyon which has some shade in the lower part of the canyon. I got some relief from the heat because there was usually a light breeze most of the way up. There were very few idiots like me out on the trail. For once I could see downtown L.A. and the L.A. basin. It was not completely shrouded in smog or fog for that matter. (BTW, it was 107 degrees when I got home)

In the future I'll have to start taking my gps along to track mileage and elevation gain. I don't think the guidebooks are very accurate when it comes to mileage. It took me an hour longer to do this hike than Peak 2049 which is 6 miles and 1500 feet of elevation gain. It shouldn't take me an hour longer due to 400 feet of elevation gain. However, it will be a year before I hike this peak again.

I also was testing my latest satellite device the Spot Messenger (wsf). I attempted to send check-in messages 8 times and got 4 e-mails. Not completely satisfactory but it will do. Now I have to figure out how to get it to provide continuous tracking to send messages more frequently.
