Back Squat...
Three videos all tied together.
The first is my 150# squat (just to parallel), then my 160 too high, followed by a 160 failure. the weird thing is that the 160 fails 1/2 way up... any insight into what 'failed' and ways to work on it? My brother-in-law thought maybe some isometric lifts at that position, but I dunno... I am open to suggestions / ideas / critiques. Karin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3pfnsGUuX4 (WFS) |

Re: Back Squat...
Your form is impeccable
![]() A lot of people have trouble around the same position while squatting. It looked to me like you could have grinded it out but it would have been a long one. I would hammer away on hip extension work and see what you can do in a couple weeks. |

Re: Back Squat...
Nice work. You could have had that last one with a bit more hip drive out of the hole.
Thats a cool looking tree house gym you have. |

I will think about more hip drive... I find that I tend to collapse at the waist when I think about hip drive too much (which really means I have a weak core, sigh). Karin |

Re: Back Squat...
it is hard to tell from that angle (have your camera man hold the camera at the same height as your knees) but you may have gotten enough depth on that first 160 lift, or at least it looked like it to me.
Either way form looked good for a max effort. As for failing part way up, i actually had the same thing on my last rep of three sets of five reps. I think it is because you are able to get the stretch reflex to help drive out of the hole but then the muscles fatiuge and cannot get you the rest of the way up. It is not uncommon and I would not worry about it, just keep training squats and youll get past it ![]() -Robert |

Re: Back Squat...
your form is terrific.
change nothing. Keep working. reset to 155. Were you doing 10# increments? If so, drop it down to 5# increments. Amazing squatting, your back is perfect and your hip drive is stellar. |

Re: Back Squat...
to me also, the first 160 looked deep enough.
Great squat form! |

Re: Back Squat...
My guys get stuck there too but I keep yelling at them and they manage to complete. As long as the bar is still moving up (can be damn near imperceptible sometimes) then keep pushing. If it comes to a stop (or starts going down again) then you might think about giving it up.
But like others have said, no problems with your squat at all. How much rest were you taking between attempts? I have to set a timer to make sure I rest 2 minutes between efforts, otherwise I only give it like 30 seconds. I've missed a single rep lift because of too short a rest, come back in a few minutes and did 3 reps. Don't underestimate the rest time in the ME stuff. |
