Lunges vs Box Steps

What does everyone think is better.

1. Lunges
2. Doing step-ups on a box (lets say 20 inch box)

The only advantage I can think of using the box is that it would train balance more and mimics the actual step you would do while hiking. I'm primarily doing lunges for carrying a heavy pack while hiking.

Opinions ? Thanks !

Don't you naturally lean forward doing step-ups? Isn't leaning forward optional doing lunges? By leaning forward, I mean more like a squat.

I don't have squat racks, so I do both of the exercises you mention.

I heard deadlifts are good for hiking etc.

I prefer step-ups for my trail running training--just find them to be much more functional. Think about it: when do you ever put one knee on the ground while hiking?
