Best thing for knees.

I'm currently working towards the splits (lots of isometric stretching) and one thing hindering me is the lack of stability in my knees, which are quite weak. I've ramped up my squat frequency to strengthen them, but are there any better knee-specific strengthener exercises?
Thanks.

Squats are fine as long as you're going low enough to hit both the hamstrings and the quads.

Give those a try. I do them daily for knee strength and stability. I've noticed an improvement after only one week of doing them. I do them at the bottom of my stairs, the height is just perfect to have complete control all the way down and feel the burn around the entire knee.

Another thing to do is simply stand on one foot for 60 seconds. It does more of the ankle but you'll get it in the knee closer to 60 seconds.

Re: Best thing for knees.

The CORE books by Verstegen have a warm-up routine that works the knees from various angles. Good for balance too.

Here's a link to the hardcover version. Paperback and/or used could be cheaper:

Thanks, those stair steps felt great - surprisingly difficult as well! Hopefully I'll see some improvement after a few weeks of those.

Re: Best thing for knees.

I would be careful about putting a load on your toes, thus creting pressure on your knee. Same idea as squating.
