Re: Navy Times Crossfit article

Old post I know but as a former Navy type and presently Army (due to non-attainment of Surface Warfare Pin (I was unhappy as a SWO) and a desire to keep serving) and former GSA I noticed a lot of Army units are big into CrossFit and a lot of Navy installations are catching up. At Fort Benning (where I did my entry training) and Fort Leonardwood (advanced training) I noticed each facility had a CrossFit facility. The latter installation had a facility known as MOTO (Marines of the Ozarks) - which was CrossFit oriented.

I noticed the 32nd Street San Diego Naval Station started adding C2 Rowers and a few kettlebells (circa August-October 2009) after I redeployed from my GSA tour.

Isn't being unhappy the SWO credo?

It is, hence the reason I left the branch. I'm not a fan of a branch that believes that abuse of JOs is a good thing.

Re: Navy Times Crossfit article

Thanks for that input, sir, I thought I was gonna get crucified and villified like other SWOs have done. I've been labeled a traitor by some.

In spite of this I still retain my pride in my Navy heritage. The most rewarding thing I did in the Navy was training in SAR as a ship rescue swimmer (none of our enlisted could pass the SAR fitness in-test).

Good point, Casey. Maybe one or two personnel could in the wardroom.

Let me say that I meant nothing discriminatory towards enlisted personnel, I simply stated that we had issues, initially, with getting anyone (of any stripe) to even pass the In-Test for SAR school, let alone the schoolhouse itself. I was the only officer in my entire class, but that just made me work that much harder. I didn't make it through, however, due to a botched final multi, but the experience and the ethos 'So Others May Live' continues to influence me even two years after the event.

De nada!

I was just curious. I went through aircrew school back in 92 and saw the SAR swimmer school, it looked monstrous.

Wouldn't happen to have rubbed elbows with an AW2 (AW/NAC/SAR) Holland by any chance. He's now a retired ATC and an uncle of mine.

Re: Navy Times Crossfit article

AYE, The SAR school has become very difficult... as we had numerous guys drop as well...It sucked as the Training Officer because it cost money from my budget everytime I sent a guy down there only to not make it.

They kept revamping the old VBSS program too, and it took my ship forever to get a full team together...
