Trying to gain weight while being on the Zone, so far not working- help?

I'm trying out the Zone, but so far I've lost 3-4 lbs. My goal is to gain weight, should I increase portions? What are your general thoughts about gaining weight and being on the Zone?

thanks!

Hey Oleg

Search round the boards there are stacks of posts on this. Zone isn't a great diet for gaining weight - don't get me wrong it's a great diet all the same. Suggestions are always increase your blocks, especially fat blocks - nuts, olive oil, avocados etc etc.

The most basic way to gain weight is just by eating as much as you can - until you feel sick and then a little more! You have to balance your goals against your health tho.

There has been a fair bit of talk about the Gallon of Milk a Day - where you simply drink a gallon of whole milk on top of your normal diet. People are experiencing good results on that. I am gonna give it a try soon too to see what happens!

As I said search the boards - there is a live thread about a guy losing weight on paleo too - have a look at that.

And good luck!

The gallon of milk a day suggestion is usually made in conjunction with a Starting Strength program. It would be effective for gaining weight without SS, but I think you'd end up gaining more fat than LBM? Seems like with CF you're not giving your muscles the same kind of stimulus that you would be with SS/Body Building. I dunno... that's just me. If it were me I'd just increase my blocks rather than the gallon of milk.

Good point. Sorry I should have mentioned that.

So are you saying that CF isn't a good way to build muscle?

Not in the same sense as body building, no. CF will build muscle and burn fat, but not as quickly as a body building routine or SS would build muscle.

Re: Trying to gain weight while being on the Zone, so far not working- help?

I would caution against the whole bodybuilding to gain muscle etc. I was into bodybuilding before I started CF, and while I had impressive strength numbers, my functional strength sucked. I now bench a fraction of what I used to, yet I am so much more functionally strong that there is no comparison.---- Rant Over---

For gaining weight. I would add fat blocks, or add the gallon of milk/day on top of your normal block intake. Adding in fat blocks won't take you out of the Zone. Adding in whole milk will pretty much keep you Zoned if I remember the milk ratios right, but with less solid food.

Mind if I ask why you're looking to add weight? If you need to add functional weight (notice where my bias is with all this "functional" talk?), maybe look at the PMenu WOD's for a little bit, or do SS for 6-12 weeks, or even longer. Anything other than BB'ing that has a higher chance for injury, adds little real life "functional strength" and overall just sucks (unless you're into it).
