I'm with you on the shaky cam; just frame the bloody shot, it's worked for ages. I really hated watching "Cloverfield."

On CGI though... gratuitous CGI is annoying, yeah. It is useful when well done, though, especially as it saves on cost. Also it gets used alot in subtle ways, like making the sky look gloomy on a day that's supposed to be stormy when nature hands the film crew a sunny day. It also makes stunt and SFX shots easier and cheaper, and paradoxically, if that's the word I want, elevates the real execution of those types of things to a whole new level, creating fantastic action films, such as Ong-Bok, Banlieue 13, and The Protector, where the excitement of the action comes in part from knowing there's no CGI, no wire work, and that those actors are really leaping from tall buildings.

How's that for a run-on sentence?

You should check out a show on Sci-Fi called "Sanctuary." It was originally done as a web series, but they're redoing it as a broadcast show for Sci-Fi Channel. Even if you're not into science fiction, it's interesting to watch an episode just to see how they work the CGI. With few exceptions, the only things that are real are props the actors physically come into contact with, like a chair, etc. Otherwise, it's all done against green screen.

What's interesting is that, in a shot which your mind knows doesn't exist as a set, such as their cavernous underground lair, you can tell it's an inserted background. But when they're in a commonplace setting, like a diner or the main character's study, or something, you can't tell. At least, I can't. I thought those sets were real until I saw a "making of" short film about the show. I think this is the future of film and television.

Of course, you have to have actors who can carry it off... I think alot of the problem with the three most recent Star Wars films (I mean, apart from the direction, and the storylines, and the characters, and the puerile fart jokes, and the...) was that not having the fantastic sets to work against made it tougher on the actors to really sell the scenes.

Re: what movies do u guys like

Memento, No Country for Old men, 3:10 to Yuma, Snatch, Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels, Departed, Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Requeim for a dream, Blow, American History X, V for Vendetta, and of course comedies like anchorman, Blades of Glory, Superbad...

There are far too many movies to name. I like anything that evokes emotion, doesn't matter which ones.
