Paleo Challenge Logistics? How to run a challenge/contest

I plan to kickoff my first Paleo challenge next month. Wanted to know some tips from those who have done this at their box.
For first time around I plan to measure by weight, waist line measure, and use pincher for body fat estimate. Also plan to check food logs weekly.
So my agenda is:
-Into to Paleo (before signup)
-signup deadline
-kickoff (measure baseline)
-weekly meeting to review progress, check journals, answer questions, share recipe ideas.
-Final measurement (Sat)
-Winner announcement (Sun) with prize give away and BBQ

Any good ideas for prizes? Other measurements or things to make this a successful event? Has anyone arranged a group grocery shopping day to help with buying food for the week?

Appreciate any thoughts on this.
Thanks!

Re: Paleo Challenge Logistics? How to run a challenge/contest

My gym usually has a couple performance benchmarks that are measured as well. Just schedule them as a regular WOD and let people know after the fact that they are benchmarks that will be retested at the end of the challenge. Not everyone has a lot of weight to lose, but some people see impressive performance increases after a month of clean eating.

Also, you may want to include some sort of scoring system or daily goals that encourages "healthy" behavior. For example 8 hours of sleep per night, minimum of 10 minutes mobility work, drink at least x amount of water, etc.

For prizes you could charge $5 or $10 entry fee with the proceeds split among the top three finishers. A free month of gym membership is easy and appreciated. You could also see if gym members would be willing to offer their services to the winners in exchange for a discounted or free month of gym membership, e.g., a massage therapist, chiropracter, car wash, whatever.

Also, you could get creative with non-monetary prizes. For example, you could name a WOD after the winner to be done by the whole gym.

Todd those are some great ideas. Thanks! I especially like the scoring system for daily healthy choices. Do those points along with the performance testing count toward the winning of the paleo challenge?

Yes. It isn't necessarily a mathematical calculation where the highest points automatically win. You can make it a subjective evaluation that takes into account points, body comp improvement, performance increase, etc.

In the same way that writing your time on the whiteboard is a type of motivation during the workout. Being able to "earn points" is a motivational tool during the challenge. You can tell members they need sleep to fully recover and perform their best, but many will still think they are fine with 6 hours sleep. However, tell them they earn an extra point in a challenge and they'll make more of an effort to get to bed early. It is an easy way to quickly measure compliance.

Re: Paleo Challenge Logistics? How to run a challenge/contest

We have run a couple of challenges on our own and also done a couple with www.wholelifechallenge.com. The Whole Life Challenge is much easier administratively and does a good job interacting with the members on a daily basis. We are doing it again starting September 7th.

Re: Paleo Challenge Logistics? How to run a challenge/contest

Hi guys,

We developed a new site where you can create and run your own nutrition challenges. The goal was to make the most easy to use and simple site where you as an admin create the event, the participant can than register/pay in to the challenge. It has all the functions that you would need such as before/after measurements and photos, daily logging of meals which turns into points, etc. We are at our final beta testing and looking for couple more gyms to try it out. If you are interested, please send me an email and we can discuss the details. james@teamcrossfit.com

www.livingfitevents.com (WFS) - this is the main site. it doesn't have much info as of yet

http://livingfitevents.com/event/ind...=1060311451345 (WFS) - this is the home page of a current live challenge in progress

Thanks!

James
