Ivan's Log

Quick intro:
My name is Ivan... 31 y/o, 5'-9", and 193lbs as of this morning. I'm in okay shape - I lift weights, run and bike, dabbled in Muay Thai and other martial arts, and enjoy GPP stuff like sandbag shouldering, sledge-hammering, etc. In the past I've done powerlifting and body building routines, and decided to give crossfit a try last week. I went to a class at an affiliate gym and I was hooked.

I decided to start last week with the May 1 WOD. With a busy work schedule and family obligations, I needed to be able to plan my workouts ahead of time (gym vs track vs backyard, etc) while still keeping the order/structure of the WODs. I've commited to a "5 days on, 2 days off" schedule because I do not work out on the weekends.

Below are the workouts I did last week:

Tuesday (at the affiliate gym)
3 rounds tabata style (20 seconds work, 10 rest, move on to the next) of:
Kettlebell High Pulls, Burpees, Rope Slams, Dumbell shoulder Press, Jumping Pull Ups, Push ups


Wednesday: 090501 Tabata This
Pull ups: 8/7/5/5/4/4/3
Push Ups: 20/15/13/10/7/9/6
Situps: 9/10/9/9/9/8/8
Squats: 13/14/12/13/12/12/12


Thursday: 090502 Hansen w 70lb dumbell
Round 1 (with lunges instead of burpees - long story): 4:00
Hansen Round 2 & 3 (forgot to hit the lap button, 20 reps each): 15:59
Hansen Round 4: 5:41
Hansen Round 5: 7:53
For a grand total of 33:33!


Friday: went out of order here. was off from work and wanted to run with the wife) 090509 800 M runs X 3 (did not do the 4th, had to go)
run 1: 3:45:41
run 2: 4:03:79
run 3: 3:50:58

090504 Front Squats

Note: ravaged my ankle Friday night. Worked out today with 85% ankle health. Honestly though, my ankle didnt affect my squat that much and I don't think the numbers would have been significantly higher had I been at 100% health.

090505 10 rounds of Pull up variations

OK. First of all, a callus on my right hand opened up at about round 5. I readjusted my grip, using only the fingers, and continued.

The instructions say that when you come off the bar the set is over, but I kept coming off the bar and worked through the required reps.

I didnt have a 45lb weight. I stuck 3 paving stones in my back pack and off I went. When I go to the gym tomorrow, I'll weigh the bag to see how much weight I was pulling - had to be close to 40lbs.

I completed 8 rounds with the required reps. I did come off the bar alot though to rest my hands and my lungs.

8 rounds time: 24:57.90

My kind of girl... she looks all cute and innocent but once you get to know her she's anything but!

Maintained and focused on good form.
I had good rhythm going for the first 5... took a breather and did the next 5. The rest were in groups of 3 or 4 until I finished.

Took a 5 minute break, and did 2X10 curls and 2X15 of rope extensions. Off untill Monday.

5X5 Squats

090510 workout

Warm up:
Bar X 10
95 X 10

Work Sets:
135 X 5
185 X 5
225 X 5
245 X 4
225 X 5

It's a whole new squat when you are taking them below parallel!

I tried doing handstand push ups... can't do them, so I slid the safety poles on the rack into the 8th hole, placed my toes on the bar and banged out 3 sets of 10. Gotta start somewhere!

Work sets:
135, 155, 175, 175 (failed this attempt - didnt count it), 155, 165, 165, 170

Ended with 9 Tabata rounds of Er Gome Er:
293 revolutions, 4:20

5 Pull-ups
10 Push-ups
15 Squats

12 rounds.
Honestly, Im a little dissapointed - get her next time!

Puked 3 pull ups into the 6th round.


Practiced a few ring dips after I caught my breath... damn those things are hard!

Five rounds for time of:
30 Glute-ham sit-ups
25 Back extensions

Time: 12.47.88

I definately underestimated this workout... it was much harder than I thought it would be.

Ended with 3 supersets of ez bar curls and straight bar tri cable push downs.
