Very good article Barry! Thanks.
One line that I don't understand. Can someone explain this? "And remember, those explosive fast-twitch muscle fibers have a disconcertingly low oxidative capacity (assuming you have any in the first place)." Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Why? |

Thanks for posting the article Barry.
That study of olympic athletes, showing how crossfit Olympic lifters are, seriously influenced me and woke me to the benefits of Olympic lifting. I had never heard of Olympic lifters feats in other sports. |

The best shape of my life was when I did NOTHING but Snatches and Clean and Jerks (okay, a few Front Squats and Jerks). I beat Skyline College's distance runners in a 400 meter challenge at the same time I was the school record holder in the discus.
It doesn't make sense until you do them. I think, in some odd metabolic way, there is nothing more exhausting than max Clean and Jerks... |

Scott-
The limited oxidative capacity of fast twitch is due to a lack of mitochondria. Rather than good or bad it is a bit of a evolutionary trade-off. If all one had was highly oxidative slow twitch fibers any type of explosiveness or speed is virtually impossible (this happens to be the 3rd phase of adaptation as described in the timecourse of training adaptations). "Smart" athletes and coaches train to maximize lactate tollerance and clearance while maintaining fast twitch fibers. In this way we maintain both power and endurance. Robb |
