i think i read that arms should be directly overhead. my arms just cannot get there.
How can I solve this?

I teach to put the bar just behind the ears while the arms are fully extended. Drive the shoulders to the ceiling to help with stablization while doing the OHS.

pvc pipe works wonders.. you can also add a little weight on it too if you like..

I think my shoulders are quite inflexible. My arms naturally went to the position in the 1st pic. I could move it to the other position although quite tough

I see an arched back and narrow foot position, is it just me? How about a wider grip?

The bar is too far forward, you want it somewhere in the region of directly above the ears. I think maybe you need a wider grip...Can you hold onto the pipe at the width shown and, while maintaining a full grip with both hands, plus keeping elbows straight, rotate the bar around backwards all the way to your glutes?

The width that you are able to do this with is the width to start OHS with. Gradually move the hands closer as flexibility develops in the shoulders, and you are still able to do the backward rotation exercise.

Also focus intently on maintaining an arched back throughout the range of the squat, top to bottom. Tight hamstrings tend to pull the pelvis forward and put a slight bow in the lower back at the bottom = not good.
