eggs, red meat and cholesterol

Hi all!
I've been trying to eat healthy for the past months (following a weight loss diet) and I've been told to eat less carbs and more protein (in addition to reduced intake of oil / fat).
My question here is about cholesterol. As I love eating eggs and even more - red meat - am I in danger of developing medical issues because of all the cholesterol intake? Red meat and eggs are rich sources of cholesterol (as far as I read). Can I have problems because of that? I eat about 300g of red meat daily and about 4 eggs every second day. Is it too much?

Thanks for replying.

Re: eggs, red meat and cholesterol

There are exceptions, but as a whole eating foods with cholesterol and saturated fat will not affect your bodies cholesterol. Those theories came about years ago and were ingrained into societies brain as true, but newer studies have found that for most people those nutrients will not affect your bodies cholesterol in a negative way when eaten in moderation. That being said if you start eating 12 whole eggs a day with 3 steaks then you might develop an issue.

Thanks for replying!
So 4 eggs every second day (that means 2 eggs per day if you divide this number trough the week) and 1 steak per day is still under "alarm" level?
But this probably depends on the individual alone, right? If you weight a little and consume that much cholesterol it is not the same as if you weight a lot (and by weight I mean muscle mass, not being obese) and eat that much?
Thanks.

Re: eggs, red meat and cholesterol

Saturated fat and dietary cholesterol are both perfectly healthy to consume in large quantities. The only blood lipid changes you will experience are a reduction in triglycerides and an increase in HDL. The danger in red meat is primarily due to high iron content and only for a select population.

Here is a lecture on how we became so misinformed about saturated fat and cholesterol http://eatingacademy.com/nutrition/h...are-bad-for-us (wfs).

Re: eggs, red meat and cholesterol

Although diet can affect your cholesterol and blood pressure, the biggest factor in either one of them becoming a health issue is genetic. typically if your father and grandfather had high blood pressure, like myself, then sooner or later you will have high BP. But at the same time none of the men in my family had to take cholesterol medicines despite eating farm food(eggs, red meat, pork, etc) every day of their life.

Your diet plan seems well below the amount that would cause any issue.

How. Old are you and have you done any blood work before this? As a baseline?
Any family history of heart problems ?

Hard to give advice out when basic info is needed

Re: eggs, red meat and cholesterol

I'm probably complicating too much, but I've checked a little and found out this.
1 steak, roasted (250 grams, sirloin) has:
Cholesterol 145mg
2 eggs per day, baked (120 grams, 1 egg is 60 grams) has:
Cholesterol 548mg
That's about 700mg of cholesterol per day. Recommended daily intake of cholesterol is (that's what I've read):
Cholesterol 200mg per day.
So 3 times higher. I know these numbers are just an approximation, but still, that number is a good guideance (at least that's why we have RDA). And I think that for cholesterol it's the same.
Anyway, I'm not going to do a big deal out of this I just wanted to hear your opinion.
I will probably go see a doctor and ask him if he could order a cholesterol test. Just as precaution.

I'm 28, my height is 189 cm, my weight is 97 kg. I've never done any cholesterol test before, no.
My grandfather had increased cholesterol, but I guess this is normal for older people? He died at age of 81.
