How Often/When to stretch

If I have more than one workout a day, is it really necessary to stretch after all of them?

Re: How Often/When to stretch

Yeah I think I'll keep it at a minimum and only stretch after my hardest workout of the day. I don't think it really helps much or at all to stretch all the time

Re: How Often/When to stretch

stretching and mobility work are two totally different things. If you do have any mobility problems, tight shoulders or hamstrings like me, then you should work on them as much as possible because it takes time and repetition to get them to loosen up. But if youre just stretching to reduce soreness or something after a workout, 5-10 minutes should be plenty.

Re: How Often/When to stretch

Good article from Mike. Only skimmed it due to length, but seems pretty legit.

My 2 cents:
I do some stuff in warmup that might be considered dynamic stretching (jump lunges, that type of thing) but I don't really think that's the main issue here, so I'll stick to static stretching, and I static stretch for only 3 reasons:

1) If I want to improve range of motion. This is the mobility work that Chris was talking about. If you need to improve ROM go to the mobility project and find some Kelly Starett videos talking about your problem area/range of motion. He will have not just stretches but tissue mobilization work which will often have more dramatic effects on mobility.

2) If I'm going to be doing an activity that requires exceptional flexibility. If I know my hamstring will be flexed past it's normal length by some gymnastic thing, I'm going to stretch my hamstring to make sure it's ready.

3) If it feels good. If I finish a workout and feel really tight, it can feel good to stretch. Probably isn't going to make any real difference in terms of recovery, but it feels good, so why not.

Re: How Often/When to stretch

Yeah David, I skimmed it too. It was good info. That's what I'm going to focus on more, is mobility work over stretching. I'll keep stretching at a minimal. For mobility I do a variety of things from holding the front rack position for 5+ minutes after every workout, to holding the overhead position for 5+ minutes, It helps my posture, strengthens my core, and increases ROM for me atleast.
