I've done O lifts and overhead squats on the grass with my cheap Olympic bar and cheapo plates before without any problem. I use a single sheet of old 3/4" plywood as a platform. I try not to drop the bar, but I'm not worried if I do. The plywood hasn't been damaged yet, but I've put a few holes in the lawn. My bar and plates are fine.
