Stress fracture in back

My 16 year old son has a well established stress fracture in his back on the right and left side of the L5. As I understand it, "well established" means it has been there for a while and won't heal. Apparently this is a very common injury for young athletic boys. My son is getting into working out and wants to do Crossfit with me. I will gladly take any time I can get with him, so I would love this. I asked the Doctor if he could workout and he said, "yes, but I would avoid clean and jerk". I asked him about squats and dead lifts, and he seemed a little unsure about those. The Doctor did advise that my son needs to work on his core strength to help support his back.

Does anyone else have a boy or girl with a similar injury? Any thoughts or advice on which exercises to avoid? They said he can play sports and he is currently playing Lacrosse without any issues or back pain.

Thanks,
Kent

Re: Stress fracture in back

I've had lots of those found in MRI's.......And never had any problem.

Poor advice from the MD about avoiding clean and jerks, but as usual, perfect form is going to be a good thing anyway
