First of all i just want to show of my new box and to say thankyou to Krista for the link and Lincoln for the original post. My friend did a awesome job, well i think anyway, especailly seeing i left the intructions at home and he had to make it from a picture i scribbled for him. Thanks John you are a genius.
http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messages/26/22722.jpg http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messages/26/22723.jpg Secondly i was talking to one of the guys at BJJ about kettlebells and he recons he could make me some using the steel mill ball they use in the mines. The factory that makes them ( the grinding balls, not kettle bells) is just behind his work and he can get me some 8kg and 12kg balls easy, and will weld handles onto them for me. My question is has anyone ever done this before? And what would be the best thickness/ size (height/length) for the handles? Also the same friend was able to get me about 10-15kg worth of rubber (plus the orange stuff for the top of the box :-) ) so i am going to try and workout how i can make a medicine ball out of it. Any suggestions? I was thinking either cut it into pellets and stuff an exsisting ball, cut it into strips and wrap it up like a ball of string or cut it into circles of varing size and glue it like you would laminating wood, than cover it? http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messages/26/22724.jpg What to you guys and girls think? Looks great. Like the shirt, want to check out the site listed. Can you post up the true link. When I enter what I can see, I'm told it doesn't exist.
Never mind, figured it out. (Message edited by enduramil on April 10, 2006) |

Josh here the link for the box directions
http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messages/26/14917.html Chris i assume it the "kiss the clown" shirt, crossfitnq.blogspot.com, you are talking about. One of the ladies i train came up with it rather than saying someone had meet pukie. It should start some interesting conversations when we wear them at the 5km Mothers Day/Breast cancer fun run/walk next month; Note mothers day in Australia is the second Sunday in may. And CrossFit North Queenslands WO that day will be, you guessed it a 5km run. For some reason the avatar on my computer keeps showing Princess Fiona |

Hey Fiona,
kettlebells have generally got a fairly thick handle, probably about 1.5 times the thickness of an Olympic bar with a bit of a curve across the top where you hold them. I can send you exact dimensions tomorrow. nice box too! I've got to get around to making a couple for the garage. |

Sweet box. Solid construction, nice paint and finish.
The angle iron on the inside is something I considered for my boxes, but my boxes have more angle and so I wasn't sure a standard 90 degree brace would work. (I had a mental block remembering my college geometry class.) The wood brace for the top is also something I considered but I was just plain getting tired of the hours I'd already put into the box. Again, with the steeper angle on my sides those internal braces would have been trickier to cut and I don't have a table saw. I could have used a jigsaw, but lately I've found the combination of Maple Plywood, Crossfit Strength and Lincoln's Impatience = lots of broken blades. I felt pretty confident about my construction technique so I stuck to just screw and glue and tight joints. Several months later, my boxes have held up beautifully and have been some of the most used equipment in my gym. I predict much use for yours and long long life. |
