Exertion Headache

Hey Everyone - Over the last two days I have gotten very bad headaches at the base of my skull after doing squats or thrusters. I have never gotten such a headache before. I have been doing crossfit for about 3 months 4 days a week with no problems. I did some research and it looks like this is an exertion headache. The post I found matches my symptoms 100%. In the post he states that you should take anywhere from 1 - 4 weeks off.

Also I have been coming off of a head cold, stuffy nose cough, etc, not sure if that can be compounding the issue.

Has anyone else had these before? Is it very serious? Do I really need to take so much time off? What are your thoughts?

Do you have poor posture and/or tight neck muscles?

Usually if you're craning your neck and have some form of mild/moderate upper cross syndrome it's possible to get headaches, especially at the place you're talking about.

Deep tissue massage + heat + posture work

I got the same thing from the dl/ohs wod last Friday. I think I traced it to a strain in my upper trap. I have been breaking up the knots with a golf ball/tennis ball, using a heat pad 2-3 times a day and focusing on my posture. Can you massage the area too much? The trap area has gotten much more sore since I started massaging it but my neck feels much looser. I still plan on taking more time off, I just don't want to overdo the massage.

I used to get exertion headaches too. It was from poor breathing techniques while lifting. Once I got my first one, subsequent exertion headaches were brought on by light to medium weight.

I took several weeks off from lifting and just did cardio.
