20K pushups in a month...

A buddy of mine is trying to hit 20K pushups in a month, or around 690 per day. He's 40, works construction and is intending to also do some kind of additional weight training, including occasional chest/arm work.

This seems like an awful lotta work without a lotta recovery time. He's challenged me to keep up with him, but this one just sounds like a dumb idea. Anyone done anything like this? I mean, I do 40-50 pushups during my warmups, plus whatever's in the WOD, but this seems outta hand. Thoughts?

Re: 20K pushups in a month...

Well I dont know the exact count, but during my mil time we had to do ins/outs. That equated to 68 pushups every time you left the dorm, entered the training building, left the training building, entered the chow hall, left the chow hall, re-entered the training building, left the training building, and went back to the dorms. That doesn't count random "hey, go take the trash out" directions from the instructors to force you into another 2 sets or any extra leaving/entering other buildings (i.e. **** I want a 6 pack of Fat Tire, but that will require 272 pushups). I, personally wouldn't make it a goal, but if its on his list then whatev.

Why? That's my first question.

2 questions.

1. Why?
2. Is he going to pay for all your doctors visits and cortisone shots once you fry your shoulders?

Indeed. I would not advise this at all.

Before I knew anything about exercise(I thought the more the better) I did this very thing(several hundred pushups a day). Eventually I got a stress fracture on my clavical and hurt my shoulder. To this day I still have problems.

Re: 20K pushups in a month...

Why even ask why?

It's just dumb.

Unless you're trying to get in the guiness book of world records or actually like trying to compete/complete (for something like a marathon) there's no point to doing massive amounts of volume on anything.

The injury risks are too high, and it's not like it's going to help you physically in any way to a significant degree.

There's much better time to spend training time on

Yeah, just to echo everyone else, that is just stupid. You aren't going to really be doing yourself much service by completing that many pushups (if you could actually do it) and chances are your body will be worse off for it. If you want to do something in one month that is impressive, try adding X amount of weight to your squat, dead lift, bench press, whatever. It is attainable and will make you stronger.
