Could someone explain to me the idea behind kipping pullups? I was always under the impression that normal deadhang pullups were more effective, but I heard someone talking the other day and it got me thinking. I do all of my pullups, from deadhang, and I can do about 15.

Is there some benefit from kipping pullups that I am missing?
When someone says they can do 30 pullups, for example, do they mean 30 kipping pullups?
And also, is it alright for me to do all pullups with the kip, or are there certain times when I should do one or the other?

I am certainly no expert but here's my take on it. A kipping pullup is a ful body motion. Were a deadhang pullup isolates certain muscles groups.

Also, because you typically can do more kipping pullups faster, it can also turn into a cardio exercise.

As far as wich one is better goes. It probably depends on your goals.

when doing crossfit - if it simply says "pullups" do kipping - at least that is the basic crossfit pullup (hands can be turned in or out in a crossfit pullup and should be varied). If it says "L-Pullup" it will be awful hard to kip while holding an L!

There is a back issue of the crossfit journal that goes into a deeper discussion of why Coach uses the kipping pullup as his basic pullup (cause this comes up on the boards a lot!). I don't know which issue but if you look at Lynne Pitts FAQs, I believe she has a list of them all with topic. Back issues are only $5 each and well worth what you will learn.

Everything you wanted to know about the kipping pullup, but were afraid to ask:
