can someone post the Zone's caloric intake formula for me? I just bought A WEEK IN THE ZONE and they never tell you how much to eat, just how to proportion your food (in several different chapters). This is what I get for buying the cheapest Zone book they had.

I am not a Zone dieter but I believe that you should eat 3 meals a day and 2 snacks. The meals should never be more than 500 calories and the snacks never more than 100. That's only a total of 1700 calories tops. However, wait for some confirmation from an actual zone dieter.

If you check Barry Sears' website they have a bodyfat calculator that also calculates your total calories and needed blocks for the program.

Neal - that is exactly what the zone recommends. It gets more specific when you break up your meals into blocks. Each block is aproximately 100 calories. You shouldn't eat more than 5 blocks per meal.

each gram of protein = 4 calories
each gram of carb = 4 calories each gram of fat = 9 calories 1 block is 7g for PRO, 9g for CHO, 1.5g for FAT So, if you're on 16 blocks per day, to work out your total calories: PRO = 16(blocks) x 7(grams) x 4(calories)= 448 CHO = 16 x 9 x 4 = 576 FAT = 16 x 1.5 x 9 = 216 FAT (hidden in protein blocks) = 16 x 1.5 x 9 = 216 Therefore total calories = 448 + 576 + 216 + 216 = 1456 Bear in mind though that by using the block method your calories will actually be a little higher due to the uncounted "hidden" macronutrient grams such as carbs in protein sources/protein in carb sources. Simple eh? |
