Re: Stop Anthos from Taking over CrossFit

" and knowing is half of the battle. "

In all seriousness, HQ just thought it was time to sound out the warhorn and rally the troops at the wall. Gather up support so as to start showing to Anthos that it wouldn't be an easy snatch and grab and dissuade them from doing so. Fat chance really when millions are on the line.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but it's a bit too late for that. I've got people at work already asking me what the heck is going on with 'my' Crossfit'. I think somebody already linked to the post on gawker. Publicity is growing across the web and while some are talking about the issue at hand, all of them are talking about how the whole thing is being played out publicly on the web.

Re: Stop Anthos from Taking over CrossFit

Power only comes in what you can convince someone/something (in this case affiliates) to do... If everyone(affiliates) believes Anthos is a crap deal, Anthos word means nothing... no power. If they were to "force" us to do something, a loud NO from many 4000 affiliates, may tell them their 20 million may(...definitely) be at risk(of turning to 0)... WE HAVE THE POWER.

Loyalty, Faith, Community

Loyalty to those who gave us the methods and opportunity.
Faith that they will take care of us.
Standing together to not take sh** from anyone trying to get in the way.

In a worst case scenario, what does this mean? I'm asking because I'm going for my level 1 cert in a few weeks with the intention to get affiliated.

Re: Stop Anthos from Taking over CrossFit

What are the affiliates going to do then? Say their loud NO and then what... Leave? There goes all that Coach has built up, you're throwing away the baby with the bathwater. And good luck advertising or even using your "CrossFit Level 1 Certification" without getting hit with lawsuits from an Anthos- or otherwise-owned CrossFit brand after you've denounced your affiliation.

Look, I'm not trying to say I think anybody should cave in, and I'm not saying I want to see CrossFit turn into a pyramid scheme or other purely moneymaking venture. I'm just trying to make the point that there's a lot of people not thinking through things entirely... so take care that you don't end up shoving your foot squarely in your mouth.

Re: Stop Anthos from Taking over CrossFit

Pretty simple actually. I think the overwhelming majority of the good ones(meaning profitable, with good business model) will leave. The weak may stay, however, those are the ones that Anthos probably doesn't want anyway. You have to figure over 50% of the affiliates are run by someone who has no business running an actual business, or training for that matter.

Coach Glassman can sell his shares before getting forced out by Anthos, and start the same model under a different name. After 2-3 years once Reebok and ESPN get on board, CrossFit may still be around, but all the players will be together under a different business name.

As for the L1 Cert, it's an internationally recognized training certification. Owning "CrossFit" per se, will not effect ones ability to say they are a level 1 certified CrossFit trainer. You do not need to be affiliated to make that claim. That's like saying if the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) got purchased by Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS), that those that has NASM certifications would not be able to say so.

This seems pretty far off the mark to me. What is your basis for saying this? Certainly there will be a few weak affiliates which probably won't last long, certainly not in a strong market area for CF, but 50%? I've visited at least half a dozen affiliates in my area, all have their strengths, none are weak.

Really? 2000+ affiliates are run by individuals who have no business running an actual business or training people??

Depending on your views I guess worst case is that:
  1. As a result of internal power struggles, CrossFit doesn't exist within a few years.
    Or
  2. CrossFit's business model changes and affiliates are told told how to run the businesses they created.
I can't predict the future any better than anyone else can, or I wouldn't be working for a living, but I doubt either scenario will come to pass in its entirety.

You've paid your cert fee, it isn't refundable, go and learn and enjoy yourself.

Start an affiliate, build it to be the biggest and best you can as fast as you can and if either of those scenarios happens, change the sign over the door and carry on doing the best job you know how to do for your customers. Find a bunch of the ex-affiliates in your area and get together to develop a local community. Have barbecues and reminisce of the good ol' days when CrossFit was a big deal and growing fast, before it turned into a globo gym chain or evaporated.
Carry on making lives better.
Your success is more about you than it is about what happens with Anthos.
