I may have to have a third helping of vegetables tonight with supper.

I'd like to laugh at this one but it just goes to show what you can do when you wave a stack of money under a politicians nose.

Re: Pizza is a Vegetable - I must be in heaven

I was just signing in to post this.

"Congress wants pizza and french fries to stay on school lunch lines and is fighting the Obama administration's efforts to take unhealthy foods out of schools."

I know no politics (so I'll keep it short), but fighting someone's policies (GOOD policies at that) just because he's on the other team is stupid, and this is just getting ridiculous. College students everywhere, rejoice. Your main food supply is on its way to being defined as growing from the ground.

(Also, Reddit.com has tons of hilarious jokes about this right now on www.reddit.com/r/funny, for those interested. Generally NSFW, but not due to bad images or anything, but because you will become unproductive for extended periods of time.)

I am getting flashbacks to the 80's when ketchup became a vegetable. Cannot believe the lengths these bastards will sell us out to fill their own greed.

While I agree, but this particular issue isn't about one side vs the other. It is simply about Congress buckling, as always, to lobbying pressure by the folks who fund their campaigns. And, of course, it is also about protecting jobs and industry in your home state. A legislator from Idaho can't possibly cast any vote that would reduce potato consumption.

It reminds me of listening to an interview on NPR with Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. Her closing statement says it all.

"Well, I'm a public health person, and we always talk about root causes. The root cause of the problems in our food system is really farm subsidies and the way that they work. We support the production of corn, soybeans, cotton and wheat. We don't support the production of fruits and vegetables. If we want people to eat more fruits and vegetables, we need to change that in some way.

The other source of corruption, of course, is the way we fund election campaigns. As long as corporations are funding the campaigns of our congressional representatives, we're not going to get laws passed that favor public health. Our laws are going to continue to favor corporate health."

Re: Pizza is a Vegetable - I must be in heaven

Does the bulk of our country support growing of a variety of fruits and vegetables?
