Question Zing/Magnesium - ZMA

I have read on here that some people take supplements that include Zinc and Magnesium.

Do many take ZMA? Have you noticed any apparent benefit, or do you take it as a "just-in-case" kind of supplement to make sure you have enough trace minerals in your diet?

I'm considering using it to help with my sleep, but also since I'm going to start a more dedicated strength training schedule.

Thanks,
~ Dave C.

If you're deficient in zinc and magnesium you may see increases in testosterone production.

The biggest thing is the sleep though. If youg et better sleep it's very important for recovery which allows you to work harder in your workouts = better adaptations, etc.

Re: Zing/Magnesium - ZMA

You should sleep and recover better with supplementation since, like most people, you're probably deficient in Zn and Mg. You can get Zn and Mg from ZMA or from calcium/magnesium/zinc supplements, which are usually far cheaper than ZMA. Just be aware that Ca partially inhibits the absorption of Zn and Mg, so you may want to take one more pill than is recommended.

You'll probably also start having crazy, vivid dreams...another plus.

Re: Zing/Magnesium - ZMA

All 2+ ions inhibit each others absorption

Ca inhibits zinc and vice versa. Same with mag.

It doesn't really make too much of a difference honestly as long as intake is pretty high. Body will absorb what it needs irregardless of substrate inhibition.

I get ca/mg/zn all in one pill just cause it's convenient...

Re: Zing/Magnesium - ZMA

Sleep is dependent on many things. First of all if you have adrenal fatigue forget about zinc or magnesium as they won't help at all. Also if your melatonin cycle is not stable, forget it. And if you wake up with an alarm clock that's another big minus. No alarm clocks in nature. We are not supposed to be awakened by some annoying cranking sound before our organs are done doing their detox cycles.

Use a hammer! Kill your clock! It's fun!!!

Re: Zing/Magnesium - ZMA

David,

I have tried both ZMA and a ca/mg/zn supplement, primarily to assist with better sleep. It's my understanding the biggest diff is ZMA has Vit B6, and the ca/mg/zn has calcium...but I believe the magnesium is really the star ingredient here (as far as a sleep aid goes).

ZMA gave me bizarro dreams which is fun, but it was not consistent - some nights I wouldn't sleep well (restless, mind racing) and if I didnt get at least 8 hours I'd wake up groggy.

I've had much better success (consistent, solid sleep) with the ca/mg/zn, and it's cheaper.

Re: Zing/Magnesium - ZMA

ca/mg/zn usually has L-glutamic acid as well as opposed to the zinc/mag/b6 (or is it b12?)

Re: Zing/Magnesium - ZMA

I took ZMA for a month. I experienced no difference in either sleep, dreaming or performance. I'll always been a good sleeper and rarely remember my dreams. I have not been tested for deficiency.
