Stubborn Body Fat

Dropped about 20 pounds since September of 2008, mostly body fat.

Pictures of myself from then and now are day and night, but some stubborn fat around the belly, love handles and chest refuse to burn off me.

I hate to ask the question but I think I know the answer.

I zone 98% strict all week but on 1 night per weekend sometimes two I'll eat whatever I want... Burger & Fries, Pizza, Beer etc,

What do I need to do to cut this remaining fat?

Do I just stay on course and let the wod's, zone and time work together ...

or

Do I need to lose the weekly cheat?

Try limiting the cheat to one night and limiting the quantity (i.e., leave half the fries, eat 1-2 less pieces of pizza, have 2 beers instead of 3, etc.). The last few lbs take inordinate attention compared to the first 20.

Could be a lot of things. Are you eating paleo foods, or just zone favorable? Also getting right amount of sleep and not overtraining.

Re: Stubborn Body Fat

Diet has been almost identical for 4 months now.
I'm weighing in at 173 - around 5'11"

Been doing a rough/strict 16 block zone. I say rough/strict because everything except dinner is measured.

Breakfast
4 Eggs in the morning in a little olive oil
2 Apples
4 Fish Oil Capsules and 1 Vitamin E

Lunch
4.5 Oz Deli Meat (Ham, Turkey, Chicken)
12 Raw Cashews
small piece of cheese around 1 oz cheddar
2 apples

Snack
2 Oz deli meat (Ham, Turkey, Chicken)
8 Raw cashews
1 apple
small whack of cheese .5 oz

Dinner
Small Chicken Breast, Chicken Stir Fry,
Broccoli or another veggie

Snack
2 Oz deli meat
8 Raw cashews
1 apple
small whack of cheese .5 oz

Tons of water.
Any advice is appreciated.

Like I said, usually Friday nights I eat whatever I want.

Get decent sleep - usually in bed by 10pm and up by 6
Training 3 on 1 off for a while now. Took a week over Christmas and if I need it I don't hesitate to take a day here or there.

Re: Stubborn Body Fat

Hi there,

Personally, I would ditch some of the apples and replace them with veggies. Also, there are better choices for protein than deli meat...maybe try some meat that's not processed.

Really? I thought apples were a good choice.

I really do like a fruit.... What would you suggest?

What would you suggest instead of the deli meat?

Re: Stubborn Body Fat

Personally I would go w/ berries/oranges/pears in place of some apples. Or try a vegie smoothie to get rid of even more apples.

Ground meat (perhaps in chili) instead of your Lunch deli meat. Tuna 1-2x's a week.

Try finding some pemmican for the other lunch meat. good luck though!

I would rather eat more of that cheese for the last snack and no deli meat, or two eggs instead of the deli meat. Or some bacon and that would take care of the fat.

Re: Stubborn Body Fat

6 apples? how do you manage that? apples are a good choice, but alot of them is not. Fruit is sugar and by eating it you are telling your body to burn sugar instead of body fat. Too much fruit can stop fat loss, so try veggies like Katie said and/or some salads. You can eat fruit, but the best times would be for breakfast and PWO. Other than that try to avoid fruit.

Deli meats are not a great source of protein due to sodium content and preservatives among other things. Try a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store or cook your own in the oven, make some pork or meatloaf, or get a crockpot and make some good soups. There are alot of options besides deli meat, however if you are eating them due to portability try beef jerky, hard boiled eggs, or some canned fish instead. A little variety in what you eat goes a long way.

Re: Stubborn Body Fat

yeah, apples are good, but you are probably having too many...getting all your carbs from apples (2 apples at lunch) is going to be a bit high on the glycemic index side of things. add in some watery/fibrous vegetables for bulk...cucumber, celery, carrots, peppers...more greens...arugala, mesclun mix...cook more veggies with dinner the night before and have some leftover for lunch the next day...broccoli, asparagus, etc.
I am dealing with the same issue. i have dropped a little over 30 lbs fat and want to drop another 10-15. I often reach for the apples or other fruit (kiwis, occasional) for part of my carbs during lunches because there are quick, easy and satisfy my rampant sweet tooth. but this is why the clasic crossfit nutrition mantra includes "SOME fruit..." too much and you will be spiming your insulin levels too high too often.
try the robb wolf approach of shifting more of your starchy carbs into the PWO meal, swee potato, apples, banana, etc plus some clean protein, salmon, chicken breast. this weay you can take advatange of the rapid tranpsort.
most deli meat is garbage IMHO... at whole foods andsome other good delis you can get real turkey breast or roast beef...this means it is actually just one big hunk of meat that they slice up for you. the real turkey breast like this is usually quite dry, but i add some light mayo or occasionally cheese for moisture. or better yet, some cukes and peppers that are cool and wet balance things nicely.
mostly i just cook meat in big batches to make my own cold cuts...it is usually cheaper this way anyway. buy boneless skinless turkey breast, chicken breasts, pork chops, pork roasts, or leaner beef roast like top round. cook upa a big batch and then slice cold for lunches.
good luck.

Re: Stubborn Body Fat

All good advice.
Shows how much I need to learn.

I was eating Apples like a madman recently.
I was more eating this way out of convenience for my schedule....

Is my breakfast OK or should I dump the apples then too?
I'll dump all fruit if it means shedding these stubborn pounds!
