Re: US Olympic Lifting Team Meet
Sure there will be men competing at the trials, but the reality is that currently the men have no slots due to several lifters getting busted thus moving countries behind us ahead of us in terms of slots earned. Right now we have zero and will have to wait for the PAN AMs to see if any men will go. Again as of now we have no slots. This is an issue we that will be brought up at the SR NAtS next month (march). So although there is a trials, it is really the women lifting to earn slots on the Olympic Team. For more info go to Goheavy.com and ask on there (olympic weightlifting forum).

How can drug-related disqualifications on other teams lower our ranking?

Re: US Olympic Lifting Team Meet
The Olympic committee decides how many competitors a country is allowed to send for each sport, but they leave it up to each National Governing Board (NGB) of the respective sports to decide which athletes get to actually go. They can have an all-or-nothing Olympic Trial, they can use a formula based on a series of competitions, they can let a head coach decide, they can flip a coin, whatever.
Weightlifting uses results of the World championships to determine how many slots a country gets. 1 point for 25th place, 2 points for 24th place, 3 points for 23rd, etc. Total number of points determines ranking of each country. Taipei finished just behind the US. The US was on the bubble, the last team to qualify for lifters. What happened was a couple of high-ranked lifters in the 94 kilo class flunked the drug test. Therefore a whole bunch of guys in the 94 kilo class moved up. For example, 26th and 27th place - zero points each - moved up to 24th and 25th place and now scored points. The problem was that the US had fewer lifters in the 94 kilo class than Taipei. Taipei therefore moved past the US in total points. |

Re: US Olympic Lifting Team Meet
Jason, According to Coach Stockel, there will be a ticket price, but it hasn't been set yet. I don't foresee it being too high though. I'll let you know when he emails me back.
