On my budget, I end up eating a lot of eggs in my diet. I am on the Zone, and Dr. Sears says to use egg whites or substitute. I am wondering what people use for egg whites, or do you just eat regular eggs? What are the key differences?

Thanks!

I find the easiest and most economical thing to do is just separate the white from the yolk when I want more whites. Eggs are pretty cheap when you buy the regular ones in large quantities. Most of the substitutes have a bunch of weird stuff in them that I think tastes pretty bad.

Egg whites in my grocer's dairy case:
All-Whites: 100% Egg Whites
$2.19 for two-8 oz cartons
Papetti Foods
Trumbull Street
Elizabeth, New Jersey 07206
1-877-PAPETTI (727-3884) 8A-4P, EST

Egg whites contain the highest quality protein you can eat, but until now using them raw in recipes carried a risk for Salmonella food poisoning. All-White: 100% Egg Whites have solved that problem because they are pasteurized. Packaged as two- pints, each containing the equivalent of five egg whites and providing 25 grams of the highest-quality protein.

They work for me. No additives, just pastureized whites.

My cost at Kroger is $3.29 per 16 fluid ounce container...so a little cheaper than the product that Coach B mentioned. But of course that doesn't matter if your grocery store doesn't carry them.

I get a half dozen egg whites and a half cup of egg substitute for breakfast every morning. I just pitch the yolks from the eggs and keep the whites. I find that cheaper than buying the packaged whites.

CostCo sells omega-3 enriched eggs $2.19 for an 18 pack. They taste like farm fresh eggs and the nutritional profile is fantastic.

Rock on Robert Wolf! We all should be eating these! While your there, buy some fish oil caps and take 3-5 with every meal, use olive oil to saute your frozen vegs, and use a little ground flax seeds in you oatmeal or protein drinks...some almonds for snack food and your good fats are covered!
