I haven't seen the one at Pendleton, but the USMC O-course is pretty standardized from base to base. Here's (WFS) an example from Quantico. Every one I've seen has grass or hard dirt between obstacles so soft sand isn't an issue. Pants and boots are pretty much essential though so you don't get rope burns or splinters or bad chafing from the logs or metal poles, especially if you're doing repeated runnings.

See the above video--that guy did it in well under 1 minute, and if I remember right the record posted at the TBS O-course was 42 seconds or something silly like that. The fact that he took off running afterwards instead of stopping means that he was probably doing it to kick off the Endurance Course, which has the O-course at its first part, so he may not have even been going all-out. At TBS you have to do the double O-course (i.e. do the course, clock keeps running while you return to the start, then do it again) and a 100% score was 3 minutes or less, and I remember more than a few guys beating that time.

I hope that if there is a similar obstacle at Pendleton, that the uniform will take into account potential for injury. Rope burns are not that bad, but are not the thing that you would want to deal with over the weekend.
So let me ask you this, what is the penalty for falling from the rope and swimming the rest of the way? Which way would be faster?

The race was not a really "strict" race, so some people did swim the 50 ft across the pond if they wanted to.

Above may be the obstacle course, or very similar. I remember driving by a few different ones on Camp P.

Big fan of the addition of the O-course, kind of wish it was longer but whatever. Also huge fan of the swim addition (albeit with fins) and the 5K+ hill run I've been wanting to see. Bike's a gimmick but a nice addition, I suppose.

Switch to bar muscle-ups is also a good thing, it takes us away from gymnastics-specialist moves toward a more general, natural fitness competition. I'd prefer just a ton of climbing over a wall, but this works, too.

Hat's off to the organizers for this years. Great work and good programming.

The only added event I would want to see is the O-Course comp. The tri will be long and boring if you watched from start to finish. Who wants to watch someone run for 6+miles. An edited version with the highlights will definitely be better.

It's about "fittest on earth". Not "most crowd-pleasing spectacle on TV".

The swim should definitely be in there in some form or another, a 700m is fairly short, and super easy with fins. The bike can be a pain in the hills, and the run might be a bit long, a 5K or less if really hilly would be just fine to shut up the people like me who have previously complained about a lack of testing people's capacity to run medium-to-long distances.

With a little luck this will turn the CF community away from always staying in the gym and working on muscle-ups and Oly lifting and more towards doing more naturally occurring fitness challenges, like running up a hill, jumping into the ocean and swimming through heavy surf, or putting on an Obstacle course in the gym like I did for my gym:

Re: 2012 Open, Regional and Games thread

A 700m ocean fin is still a good swim. I have run the hills they will be on. They suck. They suck even more when we are using rucks with 50lbs. The athletes are lucky they don't have that. These hills are no joke, and you have no idea how they feel until you are on them. They will be running the firebreaks which are hardly even or a great surface. Parts of them can be sand or loose soil with up to 40% grades. This is going to make the 08 run look like a joke. 11k through the mountains in Pendleton is a gut check to a new extreme.

There's a reason that Marine Recon and Snipers train on these hills.

I don't understand the scoring. 100 points for first person across the line, check. What points go to 2nd, 3rd, etc? Proportional to time? Place? Can someone direct me to where this info is...

Unknown and unknowable? Games athletes under fire from Marine snipers?
